Original Thought

I was having my morning Tumblr and Feedly browse when I ran across a reblog of a supposed Robert Pattison quote on dating a girl who reads. Immediately, I thought that was wrong. I remember coming across that same passage a year ago and greatly admiring it. Through the power of Google, I confirmed that it was written by Rosemarie Urquico.

Thank goodness! I didn't think Robert Pattison was capable of such prose. I really loathe what Tumblr has become. Although it and Pinterest are great content aggregators, the lack of credit and sources is troubling. Why would any writer or artist want to post their work online? It could easily be stolen, and there's a chance it could be used to create a false persona otherwise known as catfishing.

Last week, one of my classmates said that he hasn't had an original thought since starting med school. This was in regards to coming up with a catchy title for the video project. I felt there were undertones of recycling the title from the previous year's group, which felt degrading.

Where is this pressure coming from that permits others to take ideas without credit? "Good artists borrow, Great artists steal." - unknown. Yet the quote is sometimes sourced to Picasso.

I haven't had an original thought in awhile either, but I hope writing will help nurture that. I used to write whenever I felt anxious, but now I run to someone in hopes of talking it out. Lately, I've felt that it's not as comforting. I think what kept my anxiety under control was purging it onto the screen. Finding things to connect and relate to it, so that possibly, objectively, logically! -  I knew I wasn't isolated with these thoughts.

It's always about the process and hardly ever about the results.
