I've been seeing this phrase thrown around more loosely. Quite frankly, these social justice warriors are a touch too sensitive about what people consider celebrating or drawing inspiration from a culture. I just watched the "Hymn for the Weekend" MV, and there's little to be offended from it. Rather, it's beautifully shot. Sure, Beyonce, a black woman, is portrayed as a Bollywood actress, but she is also the featured collaborator. I think we need to let go of "authenticity." It's absurd to think of a dish or clothing, whatever item you please, in the current present tense is to be something that is original or exactly as it is from the past. It would be an imitation. Instead, inspirations are used to create. It's an homage-- a tribute to it's original beauty.
So let's just calm down. Enjoy the recognition and appreciate a nonpolitical agenda.
