As I am no longer a part of the undergrad universe, using Facebook has become, how do I say, cumbersome. I grow weary of status updates about how the printers at the BSB are jammed, and even more so with friends who post inside jokes. Lately, there has been a conflict waging between hiding these friends from my newsfeed and just swiftly removing them from my existence (sometimes I yell, "Off with your head!" before I cut them).
Yet I'm equally as terrible. I finally received some confirmation from NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital regarding my internship this summer. Funded by the MSfC organization, I'll be receiving reproductive health training that I most definitely won't be getting in TX. Needless to say, I'm super excited, and there's a chance that S. may be my roommate for the summer. There's still a quite a bit of tinkering and finagling to do with schedules and housing before I go off making any announcements, but I feel that it has a lot of potential to work.
Considering my venues, I didn't know exactly how and where to post this good news. I really wanted to share with my closest of friends and at the same time, let Nosey Nancy, who's monitoring my whereabouts, know that I haven't been eating cheese doodles in the basement of my parents' house. And honestly, why do I give a flying camel's hump about Nosey Nancy? That latter half of my intentions is what bothered me. Why do I have to stick it to Nancy so hard?
I ended up making a small announcement on Twitter to my close friends there and telling friends, who actually call me, casually in conversation. The idea of utilizing FB to selectively construct my life is rather gross, but I came to realize it's not a tool used in offense. I'm defending myself from what I don't share! I've noticed this especially with newer FB friends i.e. my classmates. Because I don't post pictures of what I ate for lunch, people are amazed that I can make cookies without burning the house down. Granted I like the praise that comes with it, but it's demeaning too. Hell, I'm eating organic strawberries and artisan blue cheese drizzled with local honey. Take that, plebian taste buds!
While there have been many arguments against oversharing, there's also a desire to not be misrepresented or misunderstood. You're my friend. You should know that I have a sophisticated palate, right? Striking that balance takes a lot of effort in curating a representative profile that I can't put forth, so I might as well abstain from posting. Or I could just not add "friends" and risk a reputation as that unfriendly girl, which I guess isn't such a bad idea. Who says I care about the wedge salad you just ate?
So in the next few days, I'll be taking a stab at my laziness and create more in-depth lists that don't just exclude my family. I'll see how that measures up. Otherwise, I'm seeking to downsize, because I want to continue second-guessing good news that I want to share!
